Entry Requirements
Consistent evidence points to a need to increase the level of initial nurse preparation to the baccalaureate level (Aiken et al.,2001). The United States–based Institute of Medicine (2010) “Future of Nursing” report recommended the baccalaureate degree as the entry-level qualification to practice. However, Benton (2011) noted this report failed to acknowledge that the changing demographic structure of society is resulting in a marked reduction in the population support ratio (PSR). Over the coming 4 decades, this reduction in PSR will raise questions as to whether this enhanced standard can be maintained without further consideration of skill mix, scopes of practice, and other changes. Regulatory bodies, governments, the profession, and society will therefore need to reexamine how this enhanced level may be maintained.
