The issue can be addressed macroscopically using the ideal gas law, but we must take into account the slight but detectable variations in density that occur with height. After a brief discussion of the weighing processes in section 2 we discuss how the ideal gas law can be applied to the problem in section 3. Microscopic explanations are needed to complete the picture and since gas behavior can generally be explained using classical physics and hard sphere based models, we present two approaches to the problem based on molecular motion and collisions with the walls of the weighing container.
