An alternative way to think of the salaries for teachers is to consider the derived demand for quality teachers, because that is a way to assess the range of salary options that politicians might reasonably consider. The simplest way to value effective teachers is to note that the demand for teachers can be derived from the demand for their product—educated students. For the most part, teacher demand has never been evaluated in terms of the potential gains for students implied by the economic value of better performance.
