Chapter Eight
Write with Confidence
E
PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER:
USE THE THREE-STEP PROCESS
In the last chapter, we reviewed common grammar, punctuation, word
usage, and capitalization errors and discussed strategies to remember
the rules.
In this chapter, you’ll put all the tools we’ve discussed to work. You’ll
practice writing a report, and you’ll compare your approach to another
writer’s strategy. You’ll see firsthand how using the three-step process
as a framework allows you to work productively.
A METHODICAL APPROACH
The tools you’ve learned in this book serve as a framework for the writing
process. To see how the tools function together, you’re going to be
asked to work alongside Brad, the vice president of risk management for
a Florida-based firm. Brad’s company manufactures customized novelty
gift items and is looking to build a new factory. Brad needs to write a
report to present as a handout to his company’s executive committee.
While you might lack Brad’s expertise in risk management, you can
assume the information provided in this chapter is accurate and complete.
Use the tools checklist below to guide you as you write.
Step One: Get Your Thoughts in Order
Answer the question, “What do I want my readers to do as a
result of reading this report?”
