The strain on Delhi’s water resources is made worse by the leakage of 40% of water in the city system, although the city is addressing the problem Delhi depends mainly on surface water, which is more prone to contamination than other sources, and this comes largely from the heavily polluted Yamuna river. An action plan to clean the Yamuna is ongoing, but Delhi’s water poli- cies address only partly the aim of better quality surface water, and do not fully enforce water pollution standards on local industry.
