Costs associated with pest control and sanitation also reflected trends from the case study. An economy of scale was observed when facilities were grouped according to size, with larger facilities spending between $0.62 and $0.09 less per square foot on both pest control and sanitation, respectively, than smaller facility sizes. Facilities that ranked highest on sanitation spent approximately 50% less on pest control per square foot than those facilities in the next highest category. However, due to the influence that economies of scale may have on these data, as well as building age and grain source, it is impossible to definitively conclude that the cleanliness of the facility is the driving factor behind these results.
