In the field of Communication Studies, the explosion
of new digital media seems to have awoken a grow -
ing enthusiasm among researchers to analyze both the
messages involved as well as the subjects that produce
and receive these messages. In this sense, it appears
that the greater volume of information produced by
academics around the globe requires increased efforts
for the preservation of this data and for researchers to
engage in collaborative work. The globalization of
scientific work has resulted in making the use of advanced
digital technologies imperative. However, a general
analysis of e-Research in the discipline of
Communication Studies in the Ibero-American region
indicates that this is an area that is still very young and
requires a lot of investment and effort to reach the
levels of the other disciplines that have traditionally
made intensive use of ICTs, such as the High Energy
Physics academic community in Latin America that has
already demonstrated strong development in the adoption
of e-Research tools and methods (Briceño, Arcila
& Said, 2012).
