Arsenic as a metalloid is toxic to plants and animals. Anthropogenic activities, such as contaminated irrigation water by mining and smelting industries, have released large amounts of As into paddy soils (Kham et al., 2010). Rice absorbs As more efficiently than other cereals, mainly due to the anaerobic conditions in paddy soils (Williams et al., 2007 and Su et al., 2010). Rice grown on As contaminated paddy soils can accumulate elevated levels of As and increase the transfer of it from soil to rice, eventually posing a health risk to consumers
