Within the stomach of the two A. pallipes specimens sacrificed 1 h
postmolt, the mesocardiac, zygocardiac, and pterocardiac ossicles
were found loose within the cardiac foregut, having detached from
the stomach wall, among the disintegrated gastroliths (Fig. 2a). No calcification
of new ossicles was observed, although it was evident that
new teeth had formed during the premolt period. The stomach of the
A. pallipes specimen sacrificed one week postmolt did not contain any
loose ossicles or gastroliths, presumably having been digested and resorbed.
The newly calcified ossicles of the cardiac foregut and gastric
mill were also a bright white color, similar to N. norvegicus ossicles following
calcification.
