I opened my eyes a bit and glared at the alarm clock beside my bed. The blinking red lights glared at me right back, while that infernal beeping noise kept yammering incessantly in the background.
*beep beep beep*
What bloody time was it anyway? I stretched my hand out a bit and grabbed the beeping alarm clock off my bedside table.
6:30.
Ugh, who in their right mind would get up this early? Not me, not by a long shot, I thought to myself as slammed the snooze button on my alarm and burrowed my head deeper under the pillows. Why did I even set my alarm this early anyway? It’s not like I have a drama or something. What was the occasion..?
Then it suddenly it hit me like a flash of lightning.
Oh right. It was that day today. That day I’ve been preparing for quite some time now.
Our first official anniversary.
I quickly pulled my wits together and sat-up on the bed. I rubbed my eyes and squinted at my bedside mirror. “What the..” I muttered as I glanced at my reflection staring back at me. I look like I’ve been run over by a bunch of horses. My eyes were a little too bloodshot and my hair was tousled beyond recognition. Did I wrestle with somebody while I was sleeping? Pft, doesn’t matter - It’s nothing a little washing-up won’t fix.
I swung my legs off the bed and tried to do some stretching. I wasn’t any good at it, but that darned Yoga session last year was so idiotically embarrassing that I resolved to at least include it as part of my daily routine. I tried bending a little to the side and groaned in frustration as I felt my muscles and tendons cry out in disagreement.
Ugh, this really isn’t for me. How the heck does she do it so effortlessly?
I skip the full body stretch and pick up the phone to call the nearby fast food restaurant. I need a quick breakfast before I start preparing all the stuff I need to prepare for this day. Let’s see, muffins, coffee, and perhaps a newspaper would be nice.
15 minutes later, after a good wash and some breakfast I finally look like I’ve rejoined the ranks of the living. I feel energized and excited as I mentally sift out my plans for today to check to see if I forgot something important. After making sure everything’s in order, I grab my handphone and pull up a seat at the dining table to read the newspaper that came along with my breakfast, pressing the speed dial for her number while I was at it. I glance at my clock for a bit to see if it’s already time for her to wake up.
7:39. Late enough, I suppose.
I listened to the phone on the other end ring 5 times before she finally picked up.
“Yeoboseo?” her sleepy voice answered, punctuated by an audible yawn I could practically hear from across the city. I chuckled and said,
“Good morning Princess, it’s time to wake up!”
“Hmmm? Oppa? What is this? When did you become my alarm clock?” she replied sleepily, though I could sense a smile creeping its way into her voice as she spoke. After a year and-a-half of hearing her talk to me over the phone or in person, I can easily recognize the way her tone brightens whenever she talks to me and her members. Of course, it’s a little bit different in my case, but I’ll keep those details to myself.
“Don’t tell me you forgot what today is.” I teased her gently, “Do you intend to spend this day sleeping in bed until noon?”
She yawned and retorted, “Of course not, silly. In case you forget, I’m the sharper one between the both of us. In fact, I seem to remember a little incident when you forgot to text me for quite some time after WGM ended. Do you remember that time when...”
“Alright, alright I get it. I get it,” I replied sheepishly, cutting her off before she starts reminding me of my idiotic actions a few months after our last WGM appearance. Granted, I did intend to contact her after our filming ended but then our schedules got in the way and we slowly drifted apart for a period of time. It took almost losing her to remind me of my god-awful mistake back then, and I thank whoever was watching over her that time that I was given a second chance at happiness with her. But well, that’s a story for another time, right?
“So,” I began in an effort to divert the conversation from that depressing memory, “what time should I pick you up?” I asked as I absent-mindedly turned the pages of the newspaper in front of me.
“Well, my members are dropping by later this morning for a short visit before they fly out to Singapore for a fan meet. I think they asked manager-oppa for a bit of time to come visit for an hour or two because their flight doesn’t leave until late afternoon.”
“I see. So I’ll drop by at around 12 o’clock then?” I asked while still shuffling through the newspaper.
“Eyy, you’re not going to meet them? Are you avoiding your sister-in-laws Jong Hyun-ssi?” she teased gently as I heard her giggle in the background.
I chuckled at her quip. “No you silly Princess, I still have to pick up things I prepared from a store. Today I’m going to treat you like a Princess so royal preparations are in order.”
“Ooooh, should I expect something grand then?” her voice started rising excitedly. I smothered a laugh and replied,
“But of course. Since when do I things half-heartedly? Your wish is my command” I said in an exaggerated deep voice, while bowing to the air in front of me. What was I doing?
Her tinkling laugh at the other was music to my ears. “Oh really? Any wish is it? Should I call you Prince Jjoong today just for the sake of it?” she giggled as she tried to make me acknowledge that name that still sends goosebumps down my spine whenever I hear it.
“Err… about that name,” I stammered hesitantly. Okay, so maybe the wish for everything idea wasn’t quite as foolproof as I had thought.
“What? Don’t you like it? You said I could wish for anything, right?” she asked. I could see her grinning on the other end, and knew that she’d probably convince me to go along with anyway even if I didn’t like it. Ah young and her big cute puppy eyes. Ugh.
I sighed deeply. “Alright, whatever you want Princess.” I said while scratching my head wondering how I got into this mess this early in the morning.
“Yay! Thank you dear! Oh wait, I mean Prince Jjoong!” I smiled slightly at her enthusiastic response.
“Yes yes calm down. So I’ll drop by at around 12, okay? I’ll call you when I’m near your building so you can meet me in the driveway, okay?”
“Sure! See you later Jjoong! Saaaaaaaaaaaaaa~”
It took me a few seconds to realize what she was doing. “Hey, are you imitating me when we were at that lighthouse? Oy, that’s not fair!” I laughed as I remembered how my embarrassment got the better of me that time. I haven’t been able to get over that even until now, and this girl keeps reminding me of it every chance she gets.
“Saaaaaaaaaaaaaaa~ -a -a, oppa!” she laughed as she hung up the phone, purposely leaving out those two bloody syllables I didn’t quite say out loud back then. She wasn’t ever going to let that go, huh?
I chuckled to myself and looked down at where I stopped turning the newspaper. Oh, I was in the entertainment section. On a whim I decided to sneak a quick peek into the horoscope section. I’m not a superstitious guy by any means, but occasionally I look at things like this at random out of curiosity. I scanned past the editorial cartoons and found the horoscope section where I quickly looked for today’s reading for Capricorn.
“Today is a terrible day to plan for a big event. Expect a lot of misfortune to go your way today because the stars are not aligned in your favour. For best results, stay indoors all day and watch TV instead. Cook your own meals and enjoy a leisurely day by yourself instead of going out.”
I scratch my head as I read this entry in my horoscope. What the heck? Don’t go out? Terrible day to plan? Enjoy this day by myself? This must be some sick cosmic joke. First of all I don’t enjoy cooking, and second, I don’t enjoy watching movies by myself. I’d rather play outside with my cars rather than stay cooped up here in my house. Good thing I don’t believe in this thing, eh?
I fold the newspaper up and stuff it in the rack next to my TV. Guess I better start preparing. No way I was going to let an insignificant horoscope reading get me down. Luck favors the prepared, right?
I stop and look at my reflection in the big full-length mirror inside my room. Yep, Luck favors the prepared, I reiterated to myself to rid myself of any nagging doubts about this day. This day is going to be perfect because you already planned everything to the last detail, I think to myself to mentally anchor my frame of mind as I put on the outfit I had prepared the night before. With that cheery thought I grab my keys, wallet, and handphone as I head towards the door to start my preparations.
