This research study examined the effects of ammonia removal on dairy manure composting during the compost biofiltration process. Initial properties of the compost mixes are given in Table 1. The raw manure had a moisture content (MC) of 82.0% (wb) and a C/N ratio of 17.6 while the rice hulls had a MC of 8.2% (wb) and a C/N of 94.7. The main reasons for choosing rice hulls as the bulking agent was its desirable properties of low MC, high C/N ratio and relatively low bulk density than the others. Initial and final values for various physical and chemical properties for the materials used in compost mixtures are given in Table 2. The electrical conductivity (EC), T-C and T-N decreased as the raw mixture was composted, while ash and pH increased. Measured ash content increased 5.45% (db). The pH increased from an initial value of 6.4 to value of 7.5 at the end of the process. The MC and C/N ratio did not change significantly throughout the composting process. Results for this study showed only slight differences between the initial and final main (MC, pH and C/N ratio) properties during composting.
