2.3. Questionnaire and data collection
The questionnaire was undertaken in BKJ and in three reference
areas in Semarang: Graha Estetika (S1), Banteng Selatan (S2)
and Genuk Sari (S3). In areas S1, S2 and S3, waste is collected via
a conventional Indonesian system. In these three areas, household
waste is generally carried from home fronts to a temporary storage
site (TPS) by the local community (neighborhood association)
(Supriyadi et al., 2000). Subsequently, the waste is transferred from
the TPS to a landfill site.
Details of how the questionnaire was designed are shown in
Table 1. The questionnaire was organized into three sections. The
first part was related to general information about the respondents.
This was followed by questions that assess the respondent’s
level of environmental awareness and their understanding of waste
management issues. The final section included questions to assess
resident waste management behavior. Fifty households were randomly
chosen in each area and a copy of the questionnaire was
distributed to each household. One respondent in each household
who has a responsibility with waste discharge was asked to answer
the questions. Completed questionnaires were collected 14 days
