To represent this idea visually, I chose the technique of drip painting, famously used by Jackson Pollock. For me, this was an effective way to communicate hybridity for several reasons. Firstly, the painting that emerged was indistinct – it was easy for viewers to form their own interpretations free of the painter’s own intention. Secondly, the technique itself exploited the idea of collision – between paints, and between paint and canvas. Finally, the paint itself behaved as a spontaneous growth on the frame of the canvas – the paint was not entirely controllable.
