The percentage of sediments within different size classes differed significantly across shelf locations (Fig. 5a–c and Table 3a–c). On inner-shelf reefs up to 80% of the total trapped sediments were made up of <100 μm size fractions in comparison to mid- and outer-shelf reefs where the <100 μm fraction made up only 45% and 30%, respectively. Although trapped sediments <10 μm exhibited some monthly variation (Table 3a) there was no seasonal difference in the fraction of trapped sediments within each of the three size classes (Planned contrast analysis; <10 μm, F(1,72)=1.128, P=0.292; 10–100 μm, F(1,72)=3.186, P=0.078; and >100 μm, F(1,72)=0.108, P=0.744).
