Allogeneic blood donors are tested for a variety of infectious disease markers, including
hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg); HIV-1, hepatitis C virus (HCV), and West Nile virus
(WNV) nucleic acid; antibodies to hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc), HCV, HIV-1, HIV-2,
and human T-cell lymphotropic virus types l and ll (HTLV-l/ll); and serologic tests for syphilis
and Chagas disease. When new tests become available for donor testing, they are
implemented as indicated.
