AQUATIC SOLDIER FLIES(Family Stratiomyidae) LARVAL DIAGNOSIS: (Figs. 16.62, 16.63; Plate XVI, Fig. larvae are somewhat flattened and broadened forms and when mature mea sure 3-50 mm, but usually 7-30 mm. Head is distinctive and set off from thorax. Body surface is somewhat hardened and thickened with deposits of calcium carbonate. Prolegs are lacking, but bristles or filaments are often present. Abdomen is terminally fringed with hairs. ADULT DIAGNOSIS: (Fig. 16.64) Antennae usually about midlength. There is a small, distinctive discal cell in the middle of Larvae and puparia are distinctive. The pupae are actu- ally quite small and are contained within the anterior end of a puparium that is similar in shape to the larval form. This family contains te trial and both aquatic species.
