Crude extract of basrai banana after ammonium sulphate precipitation was fractionated on Affi-gel blue gel into two fractions, a large unadsorbed (B1) and a much smaller adsorbed fraction (B2).The large unadsorbed fraction (B1) devoid of antifungal activity and a much smaller adsorbed fraction (B2) with antifungal activity
were obtained as shown in Fig. 1. The smaller fraction was subsequently resolved on Q-Sepharose column into a number of fractions the most strongly adsorbed fraction of which exhibited antifungal activity (Fig. 2). This fraction appeared as a sharp absorbance peak
when subjected to gel filtration on Sephadex G-75 column (Fig. 3)and a single band in SDS-PAGE (Fig. 4). The estimated molecular mass was 20 kDa based on SDS-PAGE. The yield of basrai banana antifungal protein was 0.0875% (3.5 mg/4 kg) (Table 1).
