The significant decreases in body mass and lean mass found during the competitive season suggest a possible negative balance in protein and/or energy. We do not have dietary intake data to investigate this possibility, but there are numerous research studies to support the importance of adequate protein and energy intake for athletes. An evaluation of NCAA Division I football player diets by Cole et al. (7) revealed inadequate energy intakes for these athletes. Based on recommendations from the National Strength and Conditioning Association, football players should consume about 50 cal$kg21 of body weight (4), and optimal energy and protein intake are required for athletes to support lean mass (15). A recent study in physically active military recruits suggested that protein intakes exceeding the recommended dietary allowance of 0.8 g$kg21$d21 are necessary to protect against lean mass loss during energy deficits.
