The mid-semester protocol also asked students a variety of questions
designed to elicit free responses regarding particularly memorable experiences
in ENGR 106 or CHE 205. Such discovery-oriented items included: “Think of a
particular class that you have taken in which you felt extremely confident in your
ability to achieve success. Tell me about this class. How were your
experiences similar and different from those in ENGR 106 / CHE 205?,” and
“Are there things that your instructor does to promote your success in ENGR
106 / CHE 205?” These questions led respondents to provide personal
interpretations of events that they perceived to be meaningful in the
development of their efficacy beliefs. The interview protocols used during BGR
and mid-semester ENGR 106 and CHE 205 interviews are presented in their
entirety in Appendices C, D, and E.
