A key point for the present purposes is that the above views and related ideas (e.g., Suddendorf and Corballis, 1997, 2007) have been formulated largely on the basis of evidence showing commonalities between remembering the past and imagining the future. However, it has become clear during the past few years that these impressive similarities are accompanied by important differences. Some such differences were reported in the initial neuroimaging studies comparing past and future events.
