Projection is the misattribution to others thoughts or feelings one
cannot own. In other words, it enables one to disown one's unacceptable
thoughts, feelings, and impulses by shifting them onto someone
else, such that the other person is perceived as possessing those same
beliefs, feelings, andmotivations. Individualswho cannot tolerate themselves
or who feel bad about themselves may project their feelings of
self-hatred onto others, thereby perceiving others as faulting, ridiculing,
or otherwise judging them. One can also adopt a severe conscience,
which turns into false accusations or intolerance toward another's behavior
(Casement, 1990).
