How does a native English speaker know the correct stress and pronunciation of a word that they see for the first time?
I'm not a native English speaker, so I'm interested in this question.
One of my experience was that I read the word "register". I thought the pronunciation is re'dʒɪstə, but my friends told me that it should be 'redʒɪstə.
The similar thing is like the pronunciation of "record".
I want to know how a native English speaker knows the correct stress and pronunciation of a new word they seen for the first time.
Thank you.
