CEO MESSAGE ON SEPTEMBER 2015
Let's make the world beautiful in our founding spirit which have helped us surmount difficulties
Last week, I visited Xiamen, a port city in Fujian, China. This city went up against Taiwan during the Cold War. Looking back in history, a general named Koxinga scoured invaders and took control over Xiamen during the Ming Dynasty to connect southern China with East Asia, which helped to boost the prosperity of overseas Chinese settlements. The city is today well known for Xiamen University and the Overseas Chinese Museum, which itself was founded by Chinese living abroad.
A deep ravine comes into the sight after the three-hour drive from Xiamen. Though it is a three-hour drive now that there are roads, bridges and tunnels built, it used to take almost ten hours to get to a remote village located amidst a ravine. No sooner do you step foot there than you’re greeted with the sight of tea plantations growing on the steep mountain climes behind. Though China is an undisputed powerhouse of green tea production, it’s also famous for Tieguanyin, which is a partially-fermented Oolong tea that grows in Fujian province. The name of this rare Tieguanyin tea means literally “Iron Buddha” and it was so named because of the shape of its tea leaves, which resemble Guanyin (Buddha) and the tree heavy like iron. When fermented for a long time, it turns into black tea or dark tea, which has a different flavor and aroma.
In this remote Xiamen village stand countless buildings called Tulou or “earthen building,” a type of high-rise dwelling made with soil by the many refugees who moved down to southern China back in the times of the canton system. They fled to the mountains of Fujian province to avoid war. The mountains were a great place to hide away from prying eyes. Refugees were called Hakka (“guest families” or “wanderers”) because they were like newly arrived guests compared to the natives who were called Tujia (“native dwellers”).
The Hakka people lived in fear in a strange land away from their home, while also suffering the horror of war. Raiders stalked the rugged mountain paths and made short work of those who travelled alone. Being vulnerable and having nothing of their own, they had to unite in order to survive. The Hakka people built large enclosed earthen buildings and formed their own community there. The Tulou, then, was not just their home, but their castle. The U.S. flagged the Tulous as nuclear installations when it first saw them in satellite images in the 1950s. Since listed as UNESCO World Heritage site, Tulous have also been described as four dishes and a soup in a nod to their round and square shape which makes them appear like a meal setting when viewed from above.
As I mentioned, the Tulou was more than a home: it was a castle. With its inbuilt fortifications, the Tulou is reckoned to be able to protect the people inside against the enemies, natural disasters, savage beasts and thieves lurking outside. And, on that note, you will not find any windows in a Tulou on either the 1st or 2nd floors. The building is about 4-5 storeys high, made with stones, wood and soil without any steel reinforcement. The Tulou is designed for communal living. Though there were no sanitations systems or electrical facilities at that time, the Tulou kept a kitchen and bathroom on the 1st floor and a storage space on the 2nd floor to support a multi-family communal lifestyle. People lived in rooms on the 3rd-5th floors which had small windows and rooms clustered close by so that there were few secrets for long. The building also reveals clues about how the people inside tried to protect themselves against the unforgiving elements. The buildings were typically put up hastily, which helped to forge the special communal bonds that served them well when seeking to overcome difficulties. Most Hakka people today can trace their routes from Xiamen, even though they may now live in Southeast Asia. They gathered, made Xiamen their home and overcame hardships together. Many high-class people and merchants in the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia – including former Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and former Taiwanese President Lee Teng-hui – are descendants of the Hakka people in Xiamen.
Dear Asian Beauty Creators,
Not long ago, I heard that magpies build their nests on days when the winds are strongest. If they nest on a day when the air is still and the wind is weak, their eggs and young could tumble when the strong wind blows. But if they build a nest when the wind is strongest, it will stay strong and robust even when the storm comes, albeit at the cost of greater effort up front.
We have faced our own challenges in navigating the MERS crisis in the two months since June. During the crisis, I reflected on how compatible we are. Our growth in the duty free market has been held back by the decline in overseas visitor numbers to Korea. Travel retail and duty free business is of course important and what we must do well, but duty free shops are by their very nature only places where foreigners visit on their way to somewhere else. It is not somewhere locals make purchases. Selling products to Koreans and locals living abroad – in other words, sales in Korea (excluding duty free stores) and international sales are our essential business areas and where we simply must perform. If we become good at both, foreigners will buy our products in duty free shops no matter where they’re travelling to around the world. This MERS crisis has a big lesson for us in showing what we must focus on in order to strengthen our fundamentals. We must make sure to look back to our roots and enhance the value of innovation in order to improve our competitiveness and capabilities.
The year 2015 marks the 70th anniversary of AMOREPACIFIC Group and the 70th anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japan. Some countries will commemorate the end of the war while others will celebrate their historic victory. On this day of commemoration and shared memory, perhaps you’d be interested in knowing why the foundation day of AMOREPACIFIC Group is September 5? You may know that the founder and former Chairman Suh Sung-whan (pen name Jangwon) was conscripted by the Japanese colonial government and taken to China during World War II. The war ended on September 3, 1945 and the Japanese army was disbanded the next day. But, because he had to stay one night in the army barracks, he thought the next day – September 5 – was the day that true liberation was attained. Though he continued to follow his mother’s footsteps from the 1930s by doing business throughout the 1940s, it was not truly free and independent in his view. That’s why we regard our true foundation day as September 5. The former Chairman learned about a bigger world while making money to come back to Korea. With his dream of going beyond the Pacific, he headed back home the following February.
This is the last thing that the former Chairman talked about before he passed away. He had never mentioned it before. He always hoped that three countries in Asia would cooperate and grow together and thought that talking about the difficult times in the past might sound critical or like he was blaming others. The reason for unveiling his last words today is that it has been 12 years since he passed away and we are celebrating both the 70th anniversary of AMOREPACIFIC Group and Korea's liberation from Japan this year. I sure hope that Korea, China and Japan cooperate with each other and maintain a friendly relationship with each other. We became what we are today because we have been able to work through difficulties and make a new start 70 years ago. Around the foundation day, the critical biography of the founder, Cosmetics would still be my purpose, even in another life, will be introduced to the world. I would like you to reflect on the words and ethos of the founder through reading the critical biography so that you can embrace his indefatigable founding spirit and dream of making a beautiful world.
Dear Asian Beauty Creators,
Let’s build our houses on the windiest day. Our founding spirit is the spirit that never forgets the difficult times. Making something new for the first time involves great difficulties. Nothing in the world comes free. What comes easily goes easily, too. A harsh environment made the Hakka people stronger. They strengthened their bond in Tulou. We, too, will be able to grow stronger and take one step closer to a Great Global Brand Company when we keep the difficult times in mind. Let’s face up and overcome difficulties.
AMOREPACIFIC Group was last month ranked 28th in the World's Most Innovative Companies by the American business magazine, Forbes, and 1st in Asia's Fab 50 Companies. This is a fantastic achievement, particularly as the rankings reflect how innovative employees of a company are, regardless of the size of the company. Most companies in this list have become global leaders today. This is what happened with Apple a few years ago.
There are three titles I'd like us to win during my time at the helm. The first title is the World's Most Innovative Companies, the second is Great Place to Work in the world; and the third is the World's Most Respected Companies. These titles will show us to be an innovative, employee-friendly company with good CSR (corporate social responsibility). This is the goal that we must strive for and attain. We will be able to accomplish the goal when we remind ourselves of the founding spirit, our reason for being – making the world beautiful – as we move forward. In conclusion, I'd like to thank all members of AMOREPACIFIC Group for being so dedicated to your work. It is all thanks to your efforts that AMOREPACIFIC Group has made it to the list of the World's Most Innovative Companies. Thank you.
