Do you realize that training the family pet to be a protection dog can be a huge liability that can cost you even more than your money? It's true, training the family pet to be a protection dog can be very dangerous if your pet were to attack a person. Years ago it meant that you would be sued, today however you can now be held criminally responsible and end up in prison.
Quite often dog owners want to train their dog to protect the family. The question is always do they really need a protection animal? Most people do not, they simply think it is a neat idea.
There are many things to consider before deciding to have your dog trained for protection work. For example do you have the right dog? A dog that even has what it takes to be a protection dog. They are hard to find in fact almost every police department in the country get their dogs from Europe.
European dogs have been breed and imprinted as puppies to have the bravery to do this type of work. The average dog on the street does not. Besides bravery these canines have been breed to have a good balanced drive and mentality. We are not looking for a nasty dog or a killer, we are looking for a dog that knows when and when not to turn on and protect.
Another thing to always consider is the amount of traffic you have at your home. Do you have children? If so there should be a real concern about the kids that come over to visit. They can create a very real liability issue. In fact I wouldn't let my child come to your home if you had a trained protection dog because there are too many things that could go wrong.
So if you feel a need to have a pet that looks like a protection dog get a German Shepherd, a Doberman or maybe even a Rottweiler. These dogs all LOOK like they could be protective even if they are big sweethearts. Train this dog well so that it is VERY obedient. Protection dogs are always very well obedience trained.
When a bad guy see's you walking down the street or in your yard with this well trained dog they will remove you from their list of potential victims. They will simply move on and find the person with the untrained dog or no dog at all.
