In the absence of more definitive models to understand and explain elder abuse, Australia has used a spouse abuse model (Dunn, 1995). This response acknowledges that abuse, neglect, and victimization happen to mentally competent adults. Elderly victims can be included by service agencies in a partnership to improve their own safety and security. Programs that have proven effective in addressing domestic violence may be adapted for older adults. Many of the same resources are appropriate and can supply information to potential or actual elder abuse victims about interventions and options (Sellers, Folts, & Logan, 1992).
