Langston Hughes’ poem “Dreams” uses metaphors to describe dreams. It tells the reader to hold on to their dreams or their dreams will disappear. In this poem he uses two metaphors. One of them is “For if dreams die, Life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly.” He is telling us that dreams and goals guide you throughout your life. Another metaphor that Hughes uses is “For when dreams go, life is a barren field frozen with snow.” Hughes is telling us that if we don’t hold onto our dreams and let them disappear, our lives will go nowhere.
