Study Areas. This study was conducted in Gondar town and Dabat rural kebeles of North
Gondar, which were parts of a larger research project on the epidemiology of diabetes mellitus
in northwest Ethiopia. Gondar is located 727 km northwest of the capital city of Ethiopia,Addis Ababa. It is a densely populated historical city of the region with an estimated urban
population of 254,420, 120,569 male and 133,851 female, with an average household size of 4.0
in 2013 [11]. The rural district of Dabat has an estimated population of 44,723 largely living on subsistence farming [12]. The study utilized a cross-sectional community-based design. All
permanent residents in the study area who were 35 years and older were eligible to participate
in the study.
