Plate 51: CINDER CONE— Cinder cones and older lava flows
This steep-sided cinder cone and crater are located north of Flagstaff, Arizona. The black cinder is of basaltic composition. The nearly symmetrical cone formed against the flank of an older one, now weathered and lighter colored. From its left base at C.6 - 2.5 lava emerged and flowed toward the left to beyond the limits of the stereogram. Although it is very symmetrical, the cone is composite in origin, because it has yielded both cinder and lava. The lava appears to be older than the cinder. Another older lighter colored cone is at CIO - 3.6. Near the base of the stereogram you can see that lava from the old cone just below the black cone followed a creek valley toward the lower left.
