Compulsive overeating of sweet and high-fat foods is said to
be a characteristic feature of human obesity and the bingeeating
syndrome (1, 2). Heightened preferences or “cravings”
for chocolate, ice cream, pastries, and other sweet desserts have
been reported by obese women, chronic dieters, and women
suffering from the eating disorder bulimia nervosa (2, 3).
Several clinical and survey studies have identified chocolate as
the single food that is most craved by women (4, 5), whereas
others reported a further link between chocolate cravings and
the menstrual cycle (6). Heightened preferences for chocolate
have also been described as a form of addiction, and several
researchers have noted the obvious links between food addictions
and drug reward (4, 7). Binge eating has also been likened
to drug abuse because both behavioral syndromes involve
intense cravings and loss of control.
