The depletion of fossil fuel reserves, the unstable panorama of
the petrol prices and more recently, increasing environmental and
political pressures [1] have increased industrial focus toward alter-native fuel resources and encouraged the search of products origi-nated from plant biomass, as renewable sources of energy. In this
respect, mahula (Madhuca latifolia L.) flowers prove to be an eco-nomical source for ethanol production through fermentation [2–
5] . This tree species, a native of dry deciduous forest of Asian and
Australian Continents, has been however, domesticated by tribal
people in Asia for its uses as food (flower), feed (leaves and flower),
wood (timber) and alcoholic beverage (fermented flowers) which is
locally called ‘‘mahuli” in India [6]. The annual production of mah-ula flowers in India during 1997–1998 was about 45,000 Mtonnes
(www.iied.org/pubs/pdfs/G02279.pdf ), which has remained con-stant during 2006–2009[5].
