Thermal imaging of MCCBs is primarily conducted within
motor control centers for breakers feeding motor control
circuits. IR scans are conducted while the circuit is energized,
with the breaker closed. This is accomplished by defeating the
mechanical interlock included in the motor control center
(MCC) handle mechanism. Fig. 6 below shows a photo of a
thermographer conducting a survey within a MCC unit. In this
photo, the individual is standing outside of the flash protection
boundary as defined by the NFPA70E Standard, so the
appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is worn
during the survey (hand protection was temporarily removed
for dexterity in IR camera operation).
