The long-term productivity of forest ecosystems is
closely linked with the nutrient cycle (Webster et al.,
1975; Swank and Waide, 1980; Ulrich, 1987, 1989).
For most natural ecosystems, recycling rates of nutrients
limit primary production and regulate, at the
source, biotic energy flow through the trophic structures.
