To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing to you today to ask you to please pass on my concern regarding the Thailand government’s apparent inability or unwillingness to stop the illegal smuggling of Thai dogs to Vietnam for use in the incredibly cruel dog meat industry there.
I totally support the vast majority of good Thai people in their opposition to this trade, and fear that the international publicity the trade is now attracting will cause damage to the image of Thailand and its wonderful people.
How can a trade that is controlled by a few criminals be allowed to flourish when it is common knowledge who is behind it and where it is centered? Why have these people not been prosecuted and their inhumane activity stopped? Why are these victims of crime being forced to rely on charitable donations to support them?
That the Royal Thai Navy and Border patrol units are arresting and rescuing occasional shipments is to be applauded, but the housing of the dogs rescued will be an impossible task long term. Why is the trade not being stopped at the source?
Dogs are being taken now from all over Thailand and many are stolen pets.
Thailand is thought of as a tolerant and kind country, which is of course true for the majority of its people. By allowing this crime to continue the Thai government is painting Thailand as a cruel and heartless nation.
Please request the Government to act now!
Sincerely yours,
