Any patient prescribed a reduced salt diet will
benefit from referral to a dietician for both a
formal nutritional review and education (Moore
and Aithal 2006). Relatives or those cooking
for the patient should also attend any patient
education sessions to aid compliance with
this treatment regimen. The need for nursing
education is evident as nurses should be able to
promote this treatment and to educate patients
about high salt content foods to be avoided. An
awareness of medications that are high in salt is
also required so that these may be avoided.
