Definition
Falls have been defined as unintentional descents to the floor
that may or may not be assisted by another person. Falls can
be anticipated due to physiological risk factors, unanticipated
when caused by factors such as syncope or drug reaction, and
accidental when tied to extrinsic environmental factors.4
Agostini, Baker, and Bogardus’5
definition for inpatient,
acute, and long-term care areas was to define a fall as
“intentionally coming to rest on the ground, floor, or other
lower level, but not as a result of syncope or overwhelming
external force.”(p. 281)
Other definitions are broader and include falls related to
events such as syncope or stoke. For example, Nevitt’s,6
definition
of a fall is “falling all the way down to the floor or
ground, or falling and hitting an object like a chair or stair.”
The American Nurses Association7
provides as all-inclusive
definition, “An unplanned descent to the floor (or extension
of the floor, e.g., trash can or other equipment) with or without
injury. All types of falls are included, whether they result
from physiological reasons or environmental reasons.”
