The findings of this study were consistent with those of previous
studies that found that providing psychoeducation to patients with
schizophrenia was effective at improving medication adherence (von
Maffei et al ., 2015 ; Xia et al., 2011). Furthermore, the present study supported Matsuda's (2008) qualitative research, which found that the
mindset of patients with schizophrenia was characterized by “suspicion
and fear about drugs ” before they participated in the NPE sessions,
whereas it was characterized by a “reliance on drugs ” and the ability
to “maintain a normal life with medication”. On the basis of the present
study, it can be said that the NPE contributes to improving patients' acceptance of medication.
