Animals and experimental design
Sixty crossbred piglets (Duroc×Landrace×Large White) were housed individually
in floored indoor pens (50 cm×90 cm). The piglets with an average initial weight of
8.6±0.21 kg were allotted to two dietary treatments on the basis of weight, and ancestry
was equalized across treatments in a randomized complete-block design. Three replications
of 10 pigs per replicate were used for each treatment. All piglets were weaned at 35 days
and fed for 23 days. The control diet was based on maize and soybean meal. In the treatment
diet SBM was replaced with FSBM (Table 2).
The basal diet was supplemented with minerals and vitamins to meet or exceed the
requirements for piglets (NRC, 1998). Each pen was equipped with a manual feeder and a
nipper drinker. Water was availablead libitum. The environmental temperature was main
