The counselor is an action therapist who assesses and
deals with issues in the client's life with the notion that what is gained from
counseling will aid the client's self-development for the rest of his or her
life (Hennessey, 1980). To accomplish this task the counselor (1) helps the
client to understand himself or herself; (2) suggests steps to be taken by the
client; (3) directly helps the client to explore his or her own assets and
liabilities; and (4) refers the client to other personnel workers for special
help
