In the subsequently necessary choice of species not only such aspects as
site suitability, phenological behaviour and morphological characteristics have
to be considered, but also whether a species should be chosen for its palatable
leaf fodder, for their nutritious pods or for both. However, this decision will
have to be based in the first place on the potential and actual yield of the one
and the other.
Considerations of the above-mentioned kinds form the picture of a certain
ideotype directed towards the optimization of fulfilling certain objectives.
This process has to involve the appreciation of species-specific genetically
determined predominant capabilities, including those of productivity; to
enhance these by selection and breeding is likely to produce better and faster
positive results than disregarding what is already offered by nature or even
reversing it.
