Although has been studied for decades, PSB wastewater treatment is still far from industrialization. Traditional theory believes that PSB can not directly utilize macromolecules so pretreatment is required to transform macromolecules in wastewater into small ones (Imhoff and Trüper, 1989). However, pretreatment not only increases the cost but also consumes organic substances which otherwise can be synthesized by PSB into biomass. Furthermore, conventional PSB treatment requires either oxygen or light, which significantly increases the energy consumption.
