2.2.1.1. Goal and scope definition. The main goal was to conduct an LCIA to enable a comparison of environmental and health impacts (viz., damage to human health, ecosystems diversity and resources availability) of different biogas production and utilization pathways, against the declared base scenarios. The LCIA was to provide the basis for identification of pathway-dependent environmental burdens, for possible improvement of associated technologies and
processes in order to enhance the environmental sustainability of biogas as a renewable energy resource. In such context, the results inform about environmental compatible technologies for biogas production and utilization. The analyses covered the environmental and public health impacts associated with the entire biogas production chain outlined in Fig. 1. Sensitivity analysis was done to quantify the potential impacts of: (i) feedstock and digestate transportation range, (ii) variation in biogas yield in MSW, and; (iii) electricity supply source in biogas plant operation and feedstock supply logistics.
