I agree, Different doesn't always mean, just as good. Some things are different and better... the legal system of many countries is different.. and no one would rush to say they are as good. Some may be better, but some being different are much worse.
If you are using "Different' positively, as I believe the speaker is, it should suggest that "it" being different is equally good, equally sustainable, equally fair, equally successful, etc. (you can fill in many examples).
Appreciating diversity and difference is wise; mind explanding. I revel in the differences and.... I just wouldn't want to live with them all. Pick the best... for overall justice, economy, efficiency and most of all...results
