Certain invertebrate species occurred in heightened numbers in infested areas, or
were not recorded away from the yellow crazy ant areas. These include the antfeeding
paussid beetle (Beetle09) (not recorded by Scott (1932); possibly new for
Seychelles) and the myrmecophilous cricket Myrmecophilus sp. (Orth04). In
addition, the scarabaeid (cetoniine) beetle Protaetia maculata (5 P. aurichalcea)
survives alongside yellow crazy ants. Cockroaches (Blattodea) occurred at higher
densities in areas of yellow crazy ant infestation, as noted by Haines et al. (1994) in
Anoplolepis-infested areas of Mahe´. However, while ant communities on Mahe´
were badly affected by Anoplolepis infestations (Haines et al. 1994), several ant
species survived in areas with high densities of Anoplolepis on Bird Island.
