In the Chujo (1966a) experiment the observed final
number of leaves on the main shoot ranged from 10±8 to
18±6 (Fig. 6A). The model explained 89% of the variation in
the observed values. In the Wang et al. (1995) experiment
the model explained a range of final leaf numbers of 8–21
leaves with an r# of 88% (Fig. 6B). The model underpredicted
leaf number above about 17 leaves. This was due
