In very low-control situations, the task-motivated leader is able to structure and make sense out of confusion, whereas the relationship-motivated leader wants to give emotional support to group members or call a meeting. Figure 7.1 presents a summary of the findings on which the leader-match concept is based. To interpret the model, look first at the situational character- istics at the top of the figure. Leader-member relations can be good or poor; task structure can be high or low; and position power may be strong or weak. The eight possible situations(labelled i through viii) range from very favour- able for exercising control(cells i through iii) to very unfavourable for exer- cising control(cell viii). Note that cell iii is classified as favourable even though the leader has to deal with an unstructured task. This is because leader-member relations and position power are so favourable.
