For carnivorous fish, abattoir by-product meals
appear to have the greatest potential as cost-
effective replacements for fish meal (Sato & Kikuchi
1997; Bureau, Harris, Bevan, Simmons, Azevedo &
Cho 2000). Aquarium studies with barramundi
have shown meat meal to be well digested, and
diets containing high inclusions of meat meal are
well liked by the fish (Williams & Barlow 1999).
This paper examines the potential of meat meal to
replace fish meal in diets for rearing barramundi
under commercial farm and laboratory conditions.
Studies on the organoleptic characteristics and fatty
acid composition of the fish reared on these diets are
reported by Williams, Patterson, Barlow, Ford &
Roberts (2002).
