Inflammation is the intricate physiological process
underlying the body’s defense mechanism against
foreign substances and infectious agents, and the repair
of consequential injury. Inflammation increases the
expression of antiinflammatory proteins during the
initial immune stages and is suppressed in subjects
with decreased expression of inflammatory cytokine
mediators (O’Shea and Murray, 2008; Lang et al., 2006).
If the inflammatory response exceeds the protective
antiinflammatory effects, serious damage can occur.
The accumulation of this damage throughout life has
been associated with aging and age-dependent diseases
such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, neurodegenerative
disorders, and other chronic conditions
