Attention to fish production and consumption is vital to achieving one of the Millennium Development Goals—that of eradicating hunger. The target is to halve, between 1990 and 2015, the
number of undernourished people from 800 million to 400 million.2 Enhancing access of the poor to the food they need and creatinglivelihood opportunities to hasten their exit from poverty are part ofthe current fight against global hunger and extreme poverty.
