Advanced, systolic HF patients with hypoalbuminemia
have a greater than 2-fold increased risk of mortality
compared to those without hypoalbuminemia, even after
adjustment for multiple prognostic factors. This study
identifies albumin levels as a simple biomarker for
identifying patients with HF who are at increased risk for
urgent heart transplantation and death. Further investigation
into mechanisms underlying hypoalbuminemia is
warranted and may result in identifying potential novel
targets for HF therapy
