The child’s mother Moo Row was from Ka Htaw Ni village and the father Po Klot was from Paw Taw village, Tavoy, Taninthayi Division. The child’s parents fled their respective villages with their parents and siblings, arriving at Tham Hin in approximately the late 1997s. During the mother’s flight from Myanmar to Thailand she met and subsequently married the child’s father in the camp, in 2004.
After the child’s parents married, the child’s father moved into his wife’s family home to live with her and his in-laws. The child’s mother suffered from hypertension during her pregnancy. Her health condition deteriorated and she passed away in December 2004, soon after giving birth to the child. The child’s maternal grandmother, Paw Da, informed UNHCR that the child’s father was very sad about the death of his wife. In January 2005, the child’s father asked the maternal grandparents to take responsibility to care for the child. He subsequently left the camp to find work on fishing boats to earn money to support the family.
The father insisted to the child’s grandmother that he would not abandon the child and that he would return to them as soon as he had earned money to support the family. The father came back twice to visit his son, the first time in December 2005 and second time in December 2006. Whenever he came back he would stayed with his child and the maternal grandparents for about four weeks then in the following January, he went back to work in the southern part of Thailand as a fisherman.
The child’s father came back to the camp on 3 July 2007 as he had decided to go for resettlement with his son. According to the father, he wishes to be with his son. He does not want to be separated from his child.
